Researchers at Indiana University estimate that there may be one trillion living species on Earth. Other scientists put the total number of living organisms at 30 quintillion--the number 30 followed by 18 zeroes. Out of the vast multitudes who call Earth home, only one species--homo sapiens--has created written and spoken languages. We are the soles spokespersons for humanity, the Earth, and all the living creatures upon it.

This great gift of speech brings great responsibility. Some words move us forward; some words move us back.
